Hodder is nine. He lives on his own with his dad, who puts up posters at night for a living. One night, a fairy asks Hodder to save the world. He starts planning an expedition and asks the strongest boy in his class, Philip, and the cleverest boy, Alex, to join him. They say they will, but only to trick Hodder. Things become too much and Hodder escapes into his own world. Just as Hodder is about to lose touch with real life altogether, Philip discovers that he and Hodder have more in common than he thought.

The heroes of the story are the young 1st-grader Honzík, trying to get failing marks so that he can return to kindergarten; his older sister Jolanka, who likes her classmate Radim and inadvertently becomes suspected of stealing some expensive shoes; and the young teacher Adamová, continuously dogged by bad luck. She can't convince the janitor to take away the collected chestnuts, she continuously drops off her workbooks, breaks the new shoe cabinet, and the school principle constantly reprimands her for forgetting to lock the school pavilion. The situation in this impractically constructed school gets serious when somebody starts stealing the school kids' jackets. Fortunately, Honzik is there and he catches sight of an unknown lady in the school. And when he's unable to inform Radim, he plans to follow her himself.

Forced to repeat her senior year of high school, Claire's reputation is sliding from bad-ass to bad joke. Armed with an acid tongue and shielded by ever-present headphones, Claire locks onto the only student clueless to her sordid rep: Henry, a nerdy freshman she used to babysit. At night, Claire escapes to raucous concerts where she catches the eye of 33-year-old Jim, a would-be rock star who feeds on young fans' adoration. Jim leads her into an intoxicating world of hard-partying musicians, while at school, Claire takes Henry under her wing. She reinvents her dorky friend as the mysterious rebel, throwing Henry's life into hilarious turmoil. As Claire dances across the surface of these relationships, she eventually learns hard lessons about the difference between sex, intimacy, and friendship.

Five people with something in common; they're insecure, vulnerable and eternally single. When they all sign up for Italian lessons, a series of unexpected events begins. The downhearted Andreas unsuccessfully tries to take the place of the local pastor. The shop assistant Olympia has decided to rebel against her dominant father, something she's never done before. The introverted hairdresser Karen discovers her mother's somewhat dark secret. The angry and aggressive Hal-Finn is trying to cope with love and his best friend Jorgen is trying to help anybody and everybody, regardless of his own problems. As time passes, they all realize that they've come upon an unexpected opportunity to change their present lives and find happier days.
