Synopsis: It's 1822 in Denmark and 17-year-old Hans Christian Andersen is poor as a church mouse. However, the manager of the Royal Danish Theatre has mercy on him and sends him to a school in the country where the principal Meisling holds sway. The result is a conflict of wills. Meisling seeks to suppress Andersen's vivid imagination though a ban on writing and mental terror. When Andersen develops a friendship with a working class lad, Tuk, Meisling punishes Tuk every time Andersen puts a foot wrong. To save Tuk, he leaves the school. But when Anderson returns, he finds that he has to bury his first and only friend. At the worst period of his life, Andersen seeks payback…
