Synopsis: The 19th century is at an end. A ship with Swedish immigrants arrives at a Danish port on Bornholm island. Among them are Lasse and his son Pelle. They are seeking a better life, job, freedom and independence in Denmark. Eventually, they get a job offer on a large farm. Their expectations, however, are not fulfilled - they get contempt, disrespect and disdain instead of freedom and independence. Yet, in their minds they never give up hope for a better life.
